Now that we understand how reactions happen in terms of collision theory, we have a better understanding of reaction rates.  In today’s lab, we will explore factors that can influence the rate of a reaction.  This will enable us to make accurate predictions about changes required to achieve a desired rate effect for a particular process.


Warm Up 91

(1) Corrosion is a redox reaction that wears away metals.  To prevent corrosion, would it be better to live in a hot, humid environment like Hawaii or cold, dry conditions like Alaska?  Justify your reasoning.

(2) Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g), ΔH = -154 kJ/molrxn.  Sketch a particulate diagram of this reaction, an energy level diagram, and a concentration vs. time graph.  Be sure to label all relevant information.
